What are Story Tags? (Two-Hour Workshop)

Story Tags begin as a paper luggage tags purchased from any office supply store. You will use them to collage a representation of their story, the Gospel message, or teach a Bible story, for example.

This project is helpful with an individual or within a variety of groups including, but not limited to: leadership teams, bible study groups, and short-term mission teams.

The Gospel Story Tags

Participants create a collage on each tag with colors that represent the gospel through the wordless book pattern.

Wordless Book Color Pattern:

  • Tag #1, gold – God’s holiness and desire to be in relationship with humankind
  • Tag #2, black – Sin that separates one from God
  • Tag #3, red – Jesus death on the cross for one’s sins
  • Tag #4, white – Being cleansed from sin
  • Tag #5, green – Growing in relationship with God

One may ask oneself:

  • Tag #1, Have I seen God’s Holiness?
  • Tag #2, What separates me from God?
  • Tag #3, Have I received Jesus as my savior?
  • Tag #4, When have I received God’s grace and forgiveness?
  • Tag #5, How do I grow my relationship with God?

The medium of collage may help you communicate stories in which there have been no words for. You may use pictures clipped from magazines, colored papers, or fabric to represent emotions or events such as joy, hope, pain or loss, etc.

After creating the tags, take time to share with a safe person or group. Making art often helps us reach straight into our soul, and things long hidden may surface and be brought to the light. It is usually healing to be heard and seen by others who show compassion, empathy, and grace. At this point in the workshop, you may want to pray for one another, bring comfort to the hard parts of your story, and thank the Lord for times of grace you may not have noticed before.

You are encouraged to date your project and journal about the process of creating you Story Tag collage.

Our own life is the thing that most influences and shapes our outlook, our tendencies, our choices, and our decisions. It is the force that orients us toward the future, and yet we do not give it a second thought, much less a careful examination. It’s time to listen to our own story.” – Dan Allender, To Be Told
