Art Engaging Story – Peru

I am headed to beautiful Peru in just a few short hours. I am looking forward to serving women and children, with a great team of women, in Trujillo, Peru. We’ll land in Lima and head north to this coastal town. I am partnering with Helping Hands, International for this trip.

We’ll be making storyropes™ and story collage. Stay tuned – I hope to share some stories along the journey. Your prayers are greatly appreciated!

The Andies Mountains! I’ve only read about them.

The Lord God is my Strength, my personal bravery, and my invincible army; He makes my feet like hinds’ feet and will make me to walk, not to stand still in terror, but to walk, and make spiritual progress upon my high places of trouble, suffering, or responsibility! Habakkuk 3:19   We are going with God!

What Are You Thinking?

I asked the middle school students I taught in Romania to collage what they were thinking.

I had the students draw their faces or themselves as best as they could, and then add a giant thinking bubble above their heads. Then they glued down pictures from magazines that represented what they were thinking.

Here I am with several students as they find magazine pictures for their thinking bubbles.

The artwork may be a springboard for sharing stories, or to just start a conversation, and possibly have a time of prayer.

Heading To Nicaragua

It’s snowing in Colorado, but I am headed to sunny Central America. I’ve packed my storyrope™ and 3 collaged Bible storybooks in my suitcase – to bring to Nicaragua. The week planned in Nicaragua is a time of celebration. My church in Seattle has partnered with a small town, Los Cedros, for the past ten years. So, for the most part, I’ll be a part of the celebration. That might include sharing some Bible stories and my storyrope™, but I am holding it all loosely!

Los Cedros is a town where I began using “art to engage our stories,” and through the art, I had the privilege of hearing a number of women’s stories, and praying for each of them. A group of women collaged their stories in an accordion shaped book.

They helped me to see that art could be used to share stories around the world. Words were not needed within the books. (It is actually a safer way to share our stories.) We can share as little or as much as we’d like because there are only colors, shapes, and pictures in the hand made books. As women, we were able to connect more deeply because of the art and sharing our stories. It was an incredibly special experience for me. What an honor to hear another person’s story!

Story Collage – What Is It?

cross collages_example

I have updated a “page” on my website in order to explain cross collage projects that can be used as a bridge for story. The above collage ties in with the study of Gideon’s life. I ask participants 4 questions that they will respond to by collaging. They are:

• When were you gripped with fear?
• When did you feel very alone?
• When did you feel very small?
• How does God see you?

Our own life is the thing that most influences and shapes our outlook, our tendencies, our choices and our decisions. It is the force that orients us toward the future, and yet we don’t give it a second thought, much less a careful examination. It’s time to listen to our own story.” – Dan Allender, To Be Told
